Cape Breton University
Established in 1951, Cape Breton University is an open research university which comprises three institutions, namely the Xavier Junior College, Nova Scotia Eastern Institute of Technology and the College of Cape Breton. The university is associated with the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, the Association of Canadian Community Colleges, the Association of Atlantic Universities and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. The institute majorly focuses in the field of business, liberal arts, science, technology, education, and health & wellness. The sports affiliations of the university include U Sports and Atlantic University Sport.
The campus houses the Beaton Institute which is known as the second largest institute among the four institutions. The campus features a central library that has a huge collection of books, journals, research papers, and many novels. As a record, the library consists of about thousands of books. The buildings in the campus are spread over 17,000 square ft. and include workrooms, reading rooms, administrative blocks, and few auditoriums. Moreover, all the events, fests, quizzes and competitions conducted by the institute are organized within the campus. Students are provided with all the facilities.
The housing facilities involve all the basic features and necessities. The university is close to many restaurants, cafes, departmental stores and most importantly chemist shops. In addition, the campus has been expanded and four residences were constructed, namely Macdonald Residence, Cabot Residence, Harris Hall and Alumni Hall. The expansion of the campus was decided by the hostel management of the institution due to the increased number of enrolments over the years.
The university offers an undergraduate degree program, postgraduate degree program, diploma program, and certification courses. The academic structure of the institute includes a number of subjects that are categorized into various departments. Some of the major subjects are Anthropology, Dramatic literature, English, Folklore, Celtic Culture, Mathematics, Legal Studies, Information Technology, Philosophy, History, Political Science, Environmental Studies and Religious Studies. The faculty members of the institute are well-experienced and provide ample practical knowledge to the students. Also, the students are taken for industrial visits to get a better understanding of the field work.
Moreover, the university offers student exchange program that allows students to learn about a different curriculum along with the professionals. The scholarship programs are offered to the students who have a good record of academic performance and co-curricular activities. It is entirely based on their merit. As per a report generated by a survey in 2018, the total strength of the institute is 4,105 students, approximately.The university has a list of notable alumni that includes Nolan Crouse (Mayor of St. Alberta), Jason Massie (Soccer player in League player, Ontario), John W. Morgan (Former Mayor of Cape Breton Regional Municipality) and Gerald Sampson (Former Nova Scotia MLA).
