Established in 1878, Middlesex University is an open university which is associated with the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the European University Association, Coalition of Modern Universities, and Universities UK. Earlier, the university was known as the Middlesex Polytechnic University. It gained the status of a university in 1992. The university decided to re-structure its academic school to faculties in 2012.
Besides London, the university has two other campuses in Dubai and Mauritius. The campus in London features the neo-Georgian architectural style. This campus was extended in 1955 and 1969 and engineering blocks were opened along with administrative blocks. A new learning resource center was built along with a central library which consisted of about thousands of books and provided access 24x7 to students. The Ritterman building is considered a new development on the campus. The faculty of science and technology and faculty of arts and creative industries are located within the premises. Also, the university is home to the United Kingdom's first Cyber Factory
In addition, the campus comprises bioscience, biomedical science, nursing and simulation laboratories. The campus features several sports facilities including a fitness center, outdoor courts, football pitches, and tennis courts. There are many restaurants and cafes nearby. It is close to departmental stores, stationery shops, ATMs, and chemist shops.
Further, the other campus in Dubai was opened in 2005. It houses many departments, namely accounting, finance, business, management, information technology, education, and computing. Some new departments were also added, and these include marketing, media, psychology, tourism management, and social science. The third campus which is in Mauritius was constructed in 2010. This campus has a well-maintained housing system and dining spaces.
The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The total strength of the university is about 19,505 students. Undergraduate programs include 14,810 students and 4,700 students are enrolled under postgraduate programs. The academic structure of the university comprises three major faculties, namely the Faculty of Arts & Creative Industries, Faculty of Professional & Social Sciences, and the Faculty of Science & Technology. The university offers programs in other subjects that include are offered by media, design, performing arts, law, natural science, engineering, mathematics, information science, statistics, and computer science.
